Happy Tuesday!

Today we began the day with morning circle time and healthy snacks!
In Language Arts students we reviewed long sound of "Oo", practiced reading and writing co, coat, duck, rat and hen.
In Math we continued to to work on numeracy. Today students counted, wrote and represented (using math counters) number 12.
In our UOI we completed an activity about insects. As you can see in the worksheets bellow, some students are starting to write words phonetically. For the second part of this activity "Name the insects" they were encoureged to complete on their own.
At this stage students are beginning to use their knowledge of letters and sounds and phonological awareness concepts to write more of the letters in each word. They also are beginning to learn to write sight words.
Here is what we have been doing since after March break:
 - Review letters and sounds.
 - Blend and segment two and three letter words with short vowel sounds (ie: dog, cat, pig)
 - Blend and segment beginning and ending consonant blends (ie: /pl/ in play or /nd/ in bend)

Here are some tips to help students develop these concepts and skills:

 - Sound out a three-letter short vowel sound word together, for example, cat.
 - When teaching phonics, teach blending in four stages.
    1. Say the first two sounds individually. Blend them, then add the last sound and blend the word.
    2. Say the sounds for each letter individually, then blend the word.
    3. Say only the vowel sound, then blend the word.
    4. Blend the word.
Have a great evening!
